
The former slave cemetery dating back to the 18th century was once overgrown and inaccessible. Now, the Wheat Community African Burial Ground is considered a model for how to preserve and interpret a historic cemetery.
And this morning, local preservation organizations are announcing plans to create a first-of-its-kind slave cemetery registry for a 16-county region.
The fate of the Wheat cemetery changed in 2000, when former Oak Ridge Vice Mayor Will Minter, a history enthusiast, and friend Horace Miller found it. Minter had heard a former slave cemetery was on the land.
