DSS delivers and funds a wide range of programs and services as Connecticut’s multi-faceted health and human services agency.  DSS serves about 1 million residents of all ages in all 169 Connecticut cities and towns.  We support the basic needs of children, families, older and other adults, including persons with disabilities.  Services are delivered through 12 field offices, central administration, and online and phone access options.

The Position:
In this position, the incumbent will work to improve the environment for DSS staff and clients throughout the state.  

Schedule:
  • Full-time, 37.5 hours per week
  • First (1st) shift
  • Monday - Friday
  • 8:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:

  • Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial);
  • Grounds care;
  • Food services;
  • Operation of trucks of less than five (5) ton capacity;
  • Parking garage.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;

    • operate, care for and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred incumbent should have the following experience and candidates should outline such skill sets on their application:
  • Experience building and fabricating cubical workstations. 
  • Experience with building, equipment, and tools maintenance.
  • Experience with computers including sending and receiving emails.  
  • Experience working in a group as well as independently to complete assignments.  
  • Experience with installing bulletin boards, pictures, shelving as well as moving furniture.
  • Experience working with a fleet service department to ensure sure preventive maintenance schedules for fleet vehicles are followed, performing routine inspections of fleet vehicles, and acquiring new, seasonal leased, loaner and rental vehicles.
  • Experience working with inventory and inventory systems

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
