As I sat on the side of my bed thinking of a title for this lead story, I wondered what to start with. With a slew of ideas going through my head I decided to do a piece I’ve been pondering for a long while. I came to the conclusion to write about something that has been eating away at the very soul of me since I was a child. Why did white consider themselves superior to me? I mean, what gave them this most ridiculous notion? For the Negro in this country, ignorant to the history of our people, one could get caught up in this ludicrous claim. Especially the one who have bought in to religions like Judaism, Christianity, or Islam. All of these so called “Major Religions”, have the unforgettable Curse of Cannan escribed in their cannons. This curse of Cannan dictates because a drunken father’s inability to properly cloth himself, allowing one of his sons, Ham, seeing him naked, brought a curse that would forever remain on his son Canon’s children. With this curse they’ll forever be servants of their uncle’s children. – Completely ridiculous! Be that as it may, this is one of the main charges against the Black majority, now being cursed, are somewhat inferior to the ‘Gods” chosen race, White folks.
Now in this allegorical story, pasted down from generation to generation has plagued Black folks. Utter contempt to out very existence in the same room as a white person, particularly a white women, would send a whole town into a violent frenzy. The justification for slavery and colonialism was based off this very notion. “The Black man was from a race of savages running around the jungles of Africa”, “he hasn’t contributed to civilization”. How was it possible for a group white folks, completely aware that this was a morbid lie, get away with it for so long? Two centuries or more of pseudo-scholarship, consciously manufactured, dedicated to proving this preposterous proclamation.
Sociologist E. Franklin Frazier suggested that perhaps, “white America needs this form of hypocrisy to survive.” I think we should look at his words more closely. The very nation that prides itself on being, the “Land of the Free and The Home of the Brave”, hasn’t shown a history to substantiate that claim. Thomas Jefferson for instance, with his right hand can pen, what some call, the greatest document in American history. Claiming freedom of oppression for every man and with his left, hold so many into bondage. The fundamental fact that, “All Men are Created Equal” fell on death ears. As George Mason tried to explain with his proposal,
“All men born equally free and independent and have certain inherent natural rights of which they cannot, by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity; among which are the enjoyment of life and liberty, with the mean of acquiring and possessing property, and pursing obtaining happiness and safety.”
That very passage drew stark opprobrium from his colleges. So much so that the word “born” was taken out. This could destroy the whole institution of slavery. The status –quo was the slave wasn’t born free. You were considered property, to be owned and used to the salve masters liking. The very child in the black woman’s womb, was considered a form or currency. Even Jefferson, the enslaver turned quasi-abolitionist, back track and point the finger to King George,
“He has waged cruel war against nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life and liberty in persons of a distant people who never offended him...” Continuing with the hypocrisy he stated further, “and this assemblage of horrors might want no fact of distinguished die, he is now exciting those very people to rise arms among us, and to purchase that liberty of which he has deprived them, and murdering the people upon whom he has obtruded them.”
This clause of course was deleted from the original Declaration of Independence, should create pause. Instead of owning up and showing humanity, instead the so called founding fathers decided to point the finger at the crown. Equally for those of African descent was never in those thoughts. Heated debated were taking place, to build the very document that’s supposed to be the vanguard for liberty. It has become nothing more but a smoke screen for hypocrisy.
The only way this country can maintain any form of civil buoyancy, is via rewriting and oration that shines light on the glorious good and a gloomy forgotten shadow on the bad. Do as I say, not as I do should be their mantra. In the 60’s in the heat of Vietnam War, politicians are chastising black folks, in what they considered “violent protest”, deeming those actions recalcitrant. But at this same time killing thousands abroad. How? You can’t get any more to face.
All actions committed by or people to liberate themselves should be applauded. Regardless of who they offend. Is time for us to tell it how it is. Let’s call a spade a spade. The very foundation this country is built on is riddled with death and lies of past generations. We must call out these hypocrisies in history, if not, the travesty will continue.
